Alejandro Walker Da Silva
Kinesiology

A star high school soccer player, Alejandro was forced to temper his soccer dreams after his mother suffered a debilitating stroke and he was forced to work to help her support his siblings. Though his free time is now limited, he continues to coach soccer and support the youth in his community. Alejandro’s involvement in his mother’s post-stroke medical care has inspired him to pursue a career as a physical therapist.
Aniuska Vilchez
Business Administration
University of Central Florida
Aniuska fled Venezuela with her family at a young age, seeking asylum in the U.S. after persecution under the Chavista regime. Her passion for activism began early, becoming data director at just 13 for Johanna López’s historic school board campaign, which mobilized 200+ volunteers and supported the community after the Pulse tragedy. She has since worked on multiple political campaigns, including for Congressmen Darren Soto and Maxwell Frost, and now serves at the Orange County Jail Public Defender’s Office, assisting with client visits and Spanish interpretation. Her commitment to justice and civic engagement honors both her family’s sacrifices and the memory of loved ones lost to violence.
Anthonny Zabala Suarez

Anthony Zabala is an electrical engineering major at the University of Central Florida, where he also pursues a minor in mathematics. Anthony graduated with honors from Valencia College and is a member of the honors college at UCF. Originally from Venezuela, he moved to the United States in 2016. Outside of academics, Anthonny practices Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and holds a blue belt. He has a passion for Greek mythology and works part-time at an imaging center to support his education.
Andrea "Andy" Silva

After fleeing political persecution in Venezuela, Andrea “Andy” Silva came to the U.S. determined to pursue science and research with impact. She is majoring in Statistics and Data Science with a minor in Psychology at UCF, where she is a McNair Scholar conducting neuroscience and bioastronautics research in partnership with MIT. Andy has published in academic journals, won research awards, and aspires to earn a Ph.D. exploring the relationship between artificial intelligence and human cognition. Beyond research, she is a student leader, public speaker, and advocate, while also enjoying writing, music, and literature.
Angela Fereira

Shortly after Angela graduated from High school on Spring of 2025, she graduated Valencia College with an Associates in Arts degree along with a Technical Certificate as a Business Specialist. Angela began her pre-law career path in the University of Central Florida enrolled as a Legal Studies Major. Angela, a dedicated individual, is a certified volunteer advocate for children within the Legal Aid Society of the Orange County Bar Association, focusing on supporting at-risk children, while also working full-time as a Legal Assistant and working towards becoming a Case Manager for Alfano Kingsford P.A., all while balancing extracurricular activities and academics. In every role, she strives to demonstrate Hispanic power and influence by bringing her unique cultural perspective, strong work ethic, and commitment, aiming to inspire and empower others within the Hispanic community and beyond.

A cancer survivor who endured chemotherapy during her high school years, Julie is determined to use the experience as continued inspiration while pursuing a career in medicine. Living with cancer taught Julie the value of perseverance and that you can accomplish things you never thought possible. After completing her bachelor’s degree at the University of Central Florida she plans to apply for medical school and eventually help those who are dealing with cancer as she once did.
Alejandro Jaimes

Alejandro, a quiet but passionate learner and a lover of math, has overcome multiple financial and personal hardships since moving from Venezuela at 12 years old. Alejandro, as a competitor, has always believed that “it’s not over until it is” striving to do his best in every challenge. Having previous experience as a tutor and now giving technical workshops, he believes that giving education back is a great way to push people to new heights. With the help of a supportive family, he has reached UCF pursuing a bachelor’s in computer science and plans to learn Machine Learning more deeply and aspires to use technology to build a better world.
Angela Delgado

Born and raised in Colombia, Angela is a third-year student at the University of Central Florida, pursuing a double major in mechanical engineering and computer science. She works part-time as a software engineering intern while balancing her academic commitments. Outside of school and work, Angela enjoys swimming and sewing. Looking ahead, she is excited to continue learning, growing, and contributing to new opportunities.

Chelsea moved from Ecuador to the U.S. at the age of 10. Since then, she and her family have faced numerous challenges, including financial difficulties. However, as a supportive and empowering family, they have worked together to overcome many of these obstacles. Currently, Chelsea is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in business and information management with a specialization in social media and E-Marketing. Despite the demands of working two jobs, she has maintained a remarkable 4.0 GPA, demonstrating her dedication and resilience. Chelsea aspires to secure an internship followed by a career in the marketing field.
Angelica Gómez

Ever since she was young, Angelica was taught that if she wanted to succeed in life, she would have to work hard for it. Being raised in a single-mother household, Angelica would watch her mother work tirelessly to make sure they were able to live comfortably, and it inspired the same work ethic in her. When entering high school, Angelica enrolled in the Cambridge Program, where she earned her Cambridge Diploma and the Florida Academic Scholars scholarship. Angelica also did dual enrollment, gaining over 50 college credits upon graduation. She was Vice President of her school’s social studies honors club, Rho Kappa, in which she helped work for it to be reinstated at the school. She was a member of her school’s National Honor Society and School of Government Program. Additionally, Angelica was a part of her school’s color guard team, winning first place in Scholastic AA at the FFCC Championships 2024.
Angelica graduated as the Top 20th in her class and with Summa Cum Laude. Angelica is now enrolled at UCF with her major in Psychology and a minor in Legal Studies, aspiring to become a Lawyer.
Daniela Hernandez Torquemada

Shortly after turning 17, Daniela emigrated from Venezuela to Buenos Aires with her twin sister and mother due to socioeconomic issues. Despite the challenges, she completed her first year of medical school, but external circumstances forced her to move to the USA, where she started attending Valencia College. Being involved in her school and volunteering at her local community, she learned what an impact she could make as a student and as a physician. Today, Daniela balances part-time work, academics, extracurricular activities, and volunteering, with the goal of becoming a physician and researcher dedicated to helping others.

Diana was born and raised in Orlando, Florida, and comes from a beautiful family of five. After leaving Cuba, Diana’s family has had to adjust to language barriers, financial uncertainty, unemployment, and many other challenges. After living in Central Florida for over 20 years, her family has found a loving community of supporters and a place to call home. Diana aspires to major in finance at UCF while becoming a real estate agent to help others make Central Florida their home and to help welcome them to our community the way her family was welcomed and supported here.

Celimar was born in Caguas, Puerto Rico. At the age of 7 years old, she moved to Orlando, Florida along with her parents in search of opportunities and financial stability. Faced by scarcity and a language barrier; Celimar and her family had to overcome various challenges. In fourth grade she was removed from ESOL and placed into the ‘Gifted’ program; all glory to God! She was part of the National Honor Society in elementary and high school. She volunteered in her church community and in the National BETA club. In spite of having engineering certificates, she found her true passion in medicine. Currently, she has the honor of being a full-time nursing student at AdventHealth University. She aspires to be a PA and open her own general care clinic in the future that promotes inclusivity and trust.

Cesar, a Hispanic Heritage Scholarship Fund Scholar, discovered his passion for technology at age 12 while repairing computers in his father’s office.
Originally from Venezuela, he moved to the U.S. to pursue greater opportunities and has since combined his love for engineering with a commitment to service.
Now completing his final year at Valencia College, Cesar’s dream is to create a company focused on affordable, sustainable tech repair and education for underserved communities.
Colbyd Murillo

Born in Bogotá, Colombia, Colbyd Murillo immigrated to the United States as a child and became the first in his family to pursue higher education. A senior at the University of Central Florida, he has excelled academically maintaining a 4.0 GPA, while pursuing studies in neuropsychology. His journey has been shaped by resilience and a strong commitment to service, including mentoring students, leading cultural initiatives, volunteering in the community, and caring for patients in clinical settings. Colbyd has been accepted to medical school and will begin his training in Fall 2026, dedicated to serving underserved communities through medicine.
Christine Melendez

Christine Melendez is a proud Puerto Rican from New York who discovered her love of art and technology at an early age. After moving to Florida in 2006, she continued to nurture her creativity, turning it into a lifelong passion for digital media and storytelling. Now a student at the University of Central Florida, Chrissy is working toward her bachelor’s degree in Digital Media with the goal of combining artistic expression with innovative digital tools to inspire and uplift others. Her long-term dream is to grow her art shop and create digital experiences that bring people together, reflecting her belief that creativity can connect and empower communities.

Fernando Guzman is an undergraduate student at the University of South Florida, where he is majoring in Cellular and Molecular Biology. His journey in healthcare began when he started working as a pharmacy technician, an experience that opened his eyes to the vital role pharmacists play in patient care. Through this work, he has developed a deep appreciation for the impact that access to medicine. His ultimate goal is to make a lasting difference in the lives of patients and give back to his community.
Gabriel Cordero Arrieche

Shortly after moving from Venezuela to Florida with only his mom, Gabriel Cordero faced the challenges of adapting to a new culture, language, and environment. These experiences shaped his resilience and sparked his passion for helping others find their voice. In high school, he advocated for student inclusion in decision-making by creating the Principal Cabinet program, ensuring students were represented in administrative conversations. Now a sophomore at the University of Central Florida, Gabriel serves as Vice President of SHPE UCF (Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers), one of the largest organizations on campus, where he leads efforts to give back to the very community that helped him grow. He also serves as a Housing Ambassador for UCF Housing and Residence Life. Today, Gabriel continues balancing academics, leadership, and service while pursuing a degree in Aerospace Engineering and working toward a future where he can inspire change through both innovation and advocacy.
Gabriela Cárdenas

Gabriela Cárdenas was born in Maracay, Venezuela. Inspired by her parents, both civil engineers, she developed a passion for managing complex projects and leading teams. Watching her parents organize large-scale projects, adapt to unexpected challenges, and find innovative solutions shaped her decision to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, Integrated Business, with a specialization in Project Management.
At 14, Gabriela immigrated to the United States, facing the challenges of adapting to a new country and mastering English. Through perseverance, she overcame language barriers while maintaining academic excellence as a first-generation student
During high school, she worked tirelessly to earn straight A’s while participating in multiple clubs and sports, some in leadership roles, to remain competitive for university admissions and scholarships. Despite her hard work, she later learned that due to her immigration status she was ineligibility for most scholarships and financial programs. This initially left her feeling unmotivated, but with the support of a dedicated teacher, she discovered dual enrollment and began taking courses her junior year to help reduce the cost of college for her family. Gabriela’s academic journey has been marked by perseverance, navigating obstacles, and finding creative ways to overcome challenges.

Fernanda is a dedicated student who emigrated from Venezuela to the United States with her family in 2021. Adjusting to a new culture, language, and life in Orlando was challenging, but through perseverance she has built confidence, improved her English, and embraced new opportunities. Fernanda values resilience, family, and education, and she carries with her a deep appreciation for the journey that has shaped who she is today.
Karol Belen

At the age of 10, Karol and her family emigrated from Táchira, Venezuela, to the U.S. due to the sociopolitical challenges in her home country. By the age of 14, she began working part-time in customer service to contribute her small grain of effort to support her parents’ hard work. These experiences allowed her to grow as a person, often translating for customers who did not speak English and learning to support others with patience and empathy.
Initially, Karol dreamed of becoming an architect, inspired by her love for the arts. However, during her junior year of high school, she realized that her true passion was medicine, a vocation that has continued to grow through her volunteer work. Among her most meaningful experiences is her service at Nemours Children’s Hospital, where interacting with patients deepened her commitment to the healthcare field.
Today, Karol aspires to a future in medicine, with a special interest in public health and its impact on communities.
Matthew Celada

Matthew moved from Colombia to the United States at the age of 13, leaving behind family and friends. Despite the many challenges of adapting to a new culture and learning a new language, he worked hard in his studies during high school while also working part-time to help his family, and he managed to graduate with a 4.5 weighted GPA. Today, Matthew continues his education, pursuing a degree in computer science while also working a full-time job to help finance his studies.
María Torres

Raised in a low-income, single-parent household, Maria moved from Hialeah, FL to Orlando, FL to pursue a degree in Industrial Engineering at the University of Central Florida. With her mother being undocumented, Maria is self-funding her education while balancing academics, work, and leadership roles. She chose Industrial Engineering because it combines her passion for problem-solving with business concepts, while also allowing her to improve processes that make the jobs of blue-collar workers, like her mother, more efficient and accessible.
Deeply connected to her Peruvian heritage, Maria is actively involved in student organizations, most notably SHPE (Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers), where she currently serves as Professional Mentor Director. As a proud first-generation student, her goal is to graduate debt-free and later advocate for greater awareness of the opportunities available to low-income Latino students.

A multi-sport high school athlete from a family of modest means, Julimar graduated in the top ten percent of her class and started her biology degree at UCF immediately in the first summer term, when she was still only seventeen years old. Her career aspiration is to become a government research scientist in public health or disease prevention.
Jonathan Espinal

Growing up in a two-bedroom apartment with six other people taught Jonathan to make the best of any situation. Moving during the COVID pandemic, he quickly became involved in his new local community. Collaborating with Second Harvest Food bank, Jonathan helped over 100 families receive fresh produce each month. Even with this tremendous workload required yearly, Jonathan’s academic career did not falter. He received UCF’s prestigious Provost scholarship and is now enrolled in their Burnett Honors College where he aspires to graduate with a Mechanical Engineering degree.
Max Van Alphen

Max faced back-to-back cancer diagnoses for both of his parents while starting high school in a demanding magnet program. He pushed forward being part of the varsity swimming and water polo teams, caring for his younger sister, and excelling academically. Max was inducted into the National Honor Society and selected to attend Florida Boys State, where he was awarded Best Bill in the Assembly for the “Student Success Act,” all while working weekends as a lifeguard.
Today, Max is a student-athlete at Rollins College, recruited to row while majoring in Anthropology and minoring in Archaeology. He also works as a Fan Ambassador at Orlando City Soccer Club to help pay for college, continuing to balance academics, athletics, and work with the same perseverance that shaped him during those years.

Luis Martinez

Luis is a student born in Mexico and raised in Puerto Rico. He moved to Florida during third-grade year. Adapting to the English language was a significant challenge, but it also sparked his passion for foreign languages. This led him to start the unofficial «World Language Club,» where he taught friends and classmates the basics of French and Spanish, providing them with a foundation for their future language classes. Additionally, Luis founded the «TCG Club,» where he taught his classmates strategy and planning skills through card games. While serving as president of both clubs, Luis also juggled dual enrollment classes, volunteering in the school media center, and interning with the U.S. Department of the Treasury. Luis is a model student who seeks to excel and distinguish himself in everything he undertakes.
Lyan Ortiz Brito

Lyan and her family were displaced from her native Puerto Rico by Hurricane Maria in 2017. She was forced to leave her friends and schoolmates behind and start a new life in Oviedo, Florida. Lyan’s family has struggled financially since their arrival in Florida, which has led to frequent moves and constant economic challenges. However, Lyan has thrived academically, and will begin her college career at Seminole State College, where she will study kinesiology. It will be a first step toward achieving her goal of becoming a physical therapist.
María Laura Carrillo Añez

Laura’s family was politically persecuted in her native Venezuela and came to the U.S. almost three years ago. A first-generation college at UCF, she is focused on creating systems that provide viable solutions to communities that improve the administration, economic development and wealth generation. During the pandemic Maria Laura volunteered with her school’s Hispanic Latino Student Union working with the school’s Exceptional Student Education (ESE) children and volunteers.
Luciana Lazo

Luciana is a Computer Science student at the University of Central Florida from Peru. A former professional skateboarder, she balanced training with academics, graduating with honors from Broward College before transferring to UCF. Recognized by the College Skateboarding Educational Foundation, she is passionate about technology and innovation, with goals of developing AI-powered applications and video games that connect and support communities worldwide.
Melania Carrigan

Melania Carrigan is “a Cuban girl with an Irish last name” and learned to speak Spanish from her mother and grandmother. She is currently attending the University of Central Florida, where she is pursuing a BS in Civil Engineering with a minor in business administration. She maintained a 4.0 GPA during her freshman year and was recognized on the president’s honor roll.
Peter Morales

Morales Ortiz, Peter, is a U.S. Navy veteran who joined to defend this country and study
medicine while in the service, with the goal of becoming a surgeon. However, things don’t
always go as planned. In November 2021, he was diagnosed with a World Health Organization
grade II astrocytoma, and his path changed; he underwent surgery. The neurosurgeon was able to
remove about eighty to eighty-five percent of the tumor. He also underwent radiation and
chemotherapy in 2022. Yet his bravery and commitment keep him moving forward. He is now
attending AdventHealth University, pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Science, and
remains committed to keeping his word and his primary goal since the beginning.
Michael Stokes

Michael Stokes is pursuing a degree in biomedical sciences at the University of Central Florida, driven by a passion to be an advocate for the underrepresented students wanting to be in the medical field.
Prior to UCF, Michael attended Seminole State College, where he led the pre-health club and demonstrated an early commitment to the medical field. This commitment was further strengthened serving as an ER scribe and as a volunteer at Grace Medical Homes and Ronald McDonald House. These experiences have resulted in Michael’s determination to become a medical doctor, dedicated to making a meaningful impact on the lives of others.
Nazliyan Duman

Growing up in a small town in a low-income military family, Nazliyan was fascinated by community service and the idea of changing the world. Her experience with financial hardship led her to volunteer in the National Honor Society all through her middle and high school years. Her experience with community service inspired her to pursue a career with mission-based businesses and nonprofit organizations. Upon acceptance to Rollins College, Nazliyan has been interning with the nonprofit 4Roots specializing in food insecurity. Nazliyan has also worked with other nonprofits in the Central Florida area that target immigration, poverty, homelessness, and sustainable business practices. Today, Nazliyan continues to work part-time while juggling academics, extracurriculars, and volunteering.
Salma Santana

After junior year of high-school Salma decided to drop out of the International Baccalaureate Diiploma Program due traumatic events that happened the year prior. She has overcame problems such as being misdiagnosed into a behavioral hospital days before her 18th birthday. Salma has decided to go to Valencia College for one year and transfer to the University of South Florida majoring in biomedical engineering.
Samuel Rojas

After moving to the U.S., Samuel Rojas Molano embraced the challenge of learning English and quickly grew into a student leader with a 5.1 GPA. On the field, he excelled as captain of his soccer team, played with Inter Miami CF Academy, and later coached youth players. Off the field, he volunteered with city programs, community drives, and his school’s Hispanic Heritage Club, all while helping care for his younger brother and supporting his family.
Now pursuing industrial engineering at UCF with a 4.0 GPA, Samuel continues to balance academics, service, and leadership, showing resilience, responsibility, and a deep commitment to his community.
Oriana Coto Bello

When Oriana was younger, she witnessed her grandfather undergo multiple surgeries following an auto accident. This experience ignited her passion for becoming a doctor and saving lives. After relocating to the United States and learning a new language, Oriana faced significant challenges and feared her dream might not come true. Despite these obstacles, she has worked tirelessly to rebuild her life, achieving certification as a medical assistant. Today, Oriana balances full-time and part-time work while attending school as a full-time student, all in pursuit of her goal to become a neurosurgeon.
Ornella Vintimilla

While growing up in Ecuador, Ornella witnessed both family health struggles
and the ability of the medical community to successfully address them. This
is what motivated her to pursue and career in the medical field and to help those facing similar challenges. She is currently pursuing a double major in
Biomedical Sciences: Pre-medical track, and Psychology at UCF. Her dream is to become a pediatrician or endocrinologist to help her community in Central Florida. Her interest in becoming a physician is motivated, in part, by her own diagnosis of Grave’s disease (hyperthyroidism)
Paola Santini

When she turned 16, Paola and her family left everything they knew in their home Puerto Rico, to pursue a better future in the United States. She dealt with many doubts and negative comments from educators and peers who diminished her. Paola took those doubts and used them as motivation to succeed, , eventually graduating Valencia College as the “Puma of the Year” and with the highest academic honors. Today, Paola is a 2024 NOAA EPP/MSI Scholar and a Marine Biology student at UCF, with her sights set on a career in marine research.
Patricia Hernandez

At the age of nine, Patricia faced a life-changing event when her grandmother suffered a stroke, leading her to take on caregiver responsibilities. This encounter and an interest in science sparked by encouraging high school teachers inspired her to seek a career in medicine. Growing up in Venezuela, she witnessed her community and struggles due to a lack of healthcare resources, which motivated her to move to the U.S. for a better education. Currently residing in Central Florida, Patricia is dedicated to giving back to her new community while pursuing her goal of attending medical school and specializing in cardiothoracic surgery. Motivated by the resilience and compassion her mother instilled in her, she wants to raise awareness of heart disease and assist underserved communities.
Rodrigo Morales

Rodrigo moved to the United States from Mexico in seventh grade, where he faced the challenge of adapting to a new language and culture. Over time, he embraced the experience and grew from it. He recently graduated from high school in Orlando and is now in his first semester at Valencia College, pursuing a degree in Business Administration.
Committed to giving back to his community, Rodrigo serves as the youth coordinator and co-founder of the Sport Talent Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to helping young people access mentorship and athletic opportunities. He also contributes his voice as a member of the advisory board of the Orlando Chamber of Commerce, providing a youth perspective on local initiatives.
Beyond academics and volunteering, Rodrigo helps manage his family’s business, gaining valuable lessons in leadership and responsibility. His long-term goal is to expand his nonprofit internationally, creating more opportunities for underrepresented youth to grow through sports, education, and entrepreneurship.
Santiago Romero

Once forced to leave Venezuela due to the country’s socio economic crisis, Santiago is currently a Biomedical Sciences and Neuroscience major student at the University of Central Florida (UCF). Santiago is a dedicated scholar with a profound passion for understanding the intricacies of the human brain. With a strong academic foundation, research acumen, and a heart for community service, Santiago exemplifies the multifaceted nature of a dedicated student in the field of Medicine. His journey reflects a harmonious blend of academic excellence, resilience and a genuine commitment to serving and uplifting the community.
Sebastian Chacón

Since moving to the United States, Sebastian Chacón has pursued his passion for technology and education with determination. He is a junior at the University of Central Florida, majoring in Information Technology with a focus on cybersecurity. Introduced to coding at a young age by his brothers, he developed a love for problem-solving and creating tools that make tasks more efficient. His efforts reflect his commitment to supporting others in STEM, especially those who may face obstacles similar to the ones he has overcome in his own journey. Beyond academics, he hopes not only to contribute to the advancement of technology but also to continue giving back to his community by supporting and empowering the next generation of students.

Sualba’s interest in the medical field began growing up alongside an older brother with cerebral palsy and hydrocephalus. While in and out of hospitals with her brother, she saw how his medical providers worked together for the same goal of maximized independence and mobility. In the future, Sualba wants to become a medical provider in the neurology field to help other kids with special needs. She is currently working on research that focuses on creating structural interventions to reduce health disparities in highly policed communities, which has made her interested in policy development. She is also working towards becoming a licensed medical assistant to gain clinical experience and insight on providing quality care for patients.

Valeria Granja, born in Bogotá, Colombia, is athletic and studious, with a competitive spirit. She practiced rhythmic gymnastics for seven years, earning a spot on the Colombian National Team. The pandemic froze everything, which resulted in her family looking for new opportunities and moving to the U.S. Adapting to a new country presented huge challenges, including a language barrier.
Despite this, Valeria developed new skills and embraced fresh opportunities. Her parents, hardworking Latinos, sacrificed everything to provide a better future for her and her sister. In 2021, she attended Lake Buena Vista High School, where she was a member of multiple honor societies and part of the cheerleading and beach volleyball teams for four years. Valeria plans to attend Valencia College before transferring to UCF to pursue a degree in Computer Science, aiming to contribute to artificial intelligence.

Thalia first came to this country when she was seven, with a heart full of
dreams but limited resources. She watched as her great-grandmother
struggled to battle cancer without her family having any possibility of
helping her. Living in a studio apartment where the bed took up the whole
living room, and both parents had to work, she decided to work hard and earn
at least a 4.0 GPA to one day give her family the help they need. Now, she
volunteers at her church, teaching 4-5-year-olds and tries to maintain her
4.0 GPA, taking 15 to 17 credits per semester at Valencia College.

Not even a year into her immigration journey from Venezuela, the
Covid pandemic added additional complexity to the challenges Valeria
already faced in learning a new language, navigating a complex education
system, and overcoming financial difficulties. However, her passion for
Venezuelan culture led her to share it with her community here in the U.S
through volunteering, traditional dance performances, and cultural events
around the country with Isla Danza Venezuela Arte y Cultura. She hopes to
continue to support her cultural community as a nurse.

While suffering from a depression and struggling to adapt in an high school lacking hispanic representation, Walter made the decision to follow his dream. He moved to Orlando despite having all of his family in Austin, Texas, and began his journey of independence from their parents at just 18 years old. Multiple part-time jobs weren’t enough to support the financial burden of an out-of-state tuition of a heavy class schedule. Sitting around was not an option, and time was money. Halfway through his schooling, he was at the brink of getting kicked out of college for his inability to pay it, after running out of every resource he had available. As in the climax of a movie, later that week he received the call from HHSF to let him know he was selected as a scholarship candidate. Only God knows what could have happened if that call didn’t arrive, but endless amounts of hope and discipline haven’t left his body ever since.

A star high school soccer player, Alejandro was forced to temper his soccer dreams after his mother suffered a debilitating stroke and he was forced to work to help her support his siblings. Though his free time is now limited, he continues to coach soccer and support the youth in his community. Alejandro’s involvement in his mother’s post-stroke medical care has inspired him to pursue a career as a physical therapist.

Born into a politically active family, Aniuska, fled Venezuela with her parents at a young age to escape the Chavista regime, seeking asylum in the United States. Her early understanding of politics and personal experiences with persecution fueled her passion for activism. At thirteen, she became the data director for Johanna López’s school board campaign, leading a youth-driven effort that resulted in López becoming Orange County’s first Afro-Latina school board member. This campaign, which engaged over 200 volunteers and reached thousands of voters, helped her community heal after the Pulse nightclub shooting, where she lost close family friends. Since then, she has continued to work and volunteer on political campaigns. Her dedication to political activism honors the sacrifices of her parents and the memory of her friends.

Anthony Zabala is an electrical engineering major at the University of Central Florida, where he also pursues a minor in mathematics. Outside of academics, Anthonny practices Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and holds a blue belt. He has a passion for Greek mythology and works part-time at an imaging center to support his education.

In 8th grade, Ashley’s mom met a woman named Maria from Costa Rica who had two children. Maria was getting divorced, and was very poor. Maria and her children had to go to a homeless shelter where Ashley’s mom took in the oldest child. Ashley would teach him grammar and spelling in the English language. Ashley’s family was also struggling financially, but they offered what they could to make another family have a better life. A short time later Ashley went to high school and was enrolled in the IB Program. She received college credit making it cheaper for her to attend college. Ashley now works part-time as an Urban Planning Intern at ESA-Solar and a luggage handler at the Orlando International Airport, while going to school full-time.

She moved nine times prior to high school graduation and persevered to become a straight A student. Avery plans to eventually earn an advanced degree in astrobiology and join the aerospace industry.

Growing up in a single-parent household with an incapacitated mother, Bianca’s experience with visits to hospitals and doctor’s appointments opened her to the world of medicine and the vulnerable nature of the human body. She decided to pursue a career in nursing. After an abrupt medical surgery during her senior year of high school and the difficulties of recovery, she further grew in her beliefs regarding the meticulous care needed for people to heal, physically and mentally. Today, Bianca works part-time as a server in an assisted living facility, where she forms social bonds and close connections with the elderly.

A Cuban girl from Miami, Cecilia was inspired by her mother, a science teacher, to pursue a healthcare career. Despite the challenges of growing up in a single-mother household with financial constraints, she excelled academically. She placed third in biomedical health at the state science middle school fair. In high school, she graduated summa cum laude with honors. Cecilia has also played the violin since kindergarten. Recently, she co-founded and serves as president of Nursing Unidos, the first Hispanic nursing student association and club at UCF. Her goal is to bridge gaps in healthcare and improve health equity within Hispanic communities.

Growing up, Gustavo has always had a deep empathy for others. Whether it was helping his mom with phone calls in English or comforting a crying sibling, Gustavo was always first to volunteer to cheer someone up. When Gustavo was in his teenage years, he began to fall into a deep depression and struggled to fit in a world that seemed so cruel. Through the help of his friends, family, and medical professionals, Gustavo was able to overcome his mental health struggles, and it inspired him to want to study psychology. Today, Gustavo is a senior at Rollins College and he’s working at a psychiatric hospital as a child mental health technician. Gustavo will continue working on his dream career of being a child and adolescent psychologist.

During her junior year, Marie started working with the children at her campus’s child development center. Her experience led her to work closely with a child and write a case study about the child’s psychological development over the course of the semester. It was from this experience that Marie decided to apply for her master’s degree in behavioral analysis so she can support the development of neurodivergent children. Today, Marie continues to work part-time at an IT helpdesk so she can save up for her future degree.

During her first semester at Valencia College in 2022, she volunteered in the Office for Students with Disabilities West Region. Her dedication earned her a position as a Desk Clerk in the same office. Ivana recently graduated from Valencia College, earning a spot on the President’s List for Spring and Summer and being named Work Study Student of the Year. This fall, she will begin her studies at UCF, aspiring to become a psychologist specializing in child and adolescent development and promoting mental health.

Today, Jenmina works full-time to support her mother while juggling college and honors extracurricular activities.

Even with this tremendous workload required yearly, Jonathan’s academic career did not falter. He received UCF’s prestigious Provost scholarship and is now enrolled in their Burnett Honors College where he aspires to graduate with a Mechanical Engineering degree.

This led him to start the unofficial «World Language Club,» where he taught friends and classmates the basics of French and Spanish, providing them with a foundation for their future language classes. Additionally, Luis founded the «TCG Club,» where he taught his classmates strategy and planning skills through card games. While serving as president of both clubs, Luis also juggled dual enrollment classes, volunteering in the school media center, and interning with the U.S. Department of the Treasury. Luis is a model student who seeks to excel and distinguish himself in everything he undertakes.

However, Lyan has thrived academically, and will begin her college career at Seminole State College, where she will study kinesiology. Today, Paola is a 2024 NOAA EPP/MSI Scholar and a Marine Biology student at UCF, with her sights set on a career in marine research.

During the early days of the pandemic, Rodolfo constructed 1,500 face shields using a 3D printer when PPE was non-existent. He delivered these to hospitals, nursing homes, police departments, and grocery stores. Rodolfo also organized a video game tournament at his school to raise money for a nonprofit that provides video games to the less fortunate. After graduation, Rodolfo plans to work for a major aerospace company like Boeing, Lockheed Martin, or SpaceX.

Growing up, Vimalys dreamed of attending university, a goal that was uncharted territory for her family. To afford her education, she worked almost 30 hours a week in high school while balancing academics and extracurriculars. During her senior year, the COVID-19 pandemic forced her parents to close their business and file for bankruptcy, making her college savings the only source of family income. Despite these challenges, Vimalys persevered and secured a scholarship from HHSF, allowing her to attend the University of Central Florida, where she is majoring in computer science.
Vimalys serves as the External Vice President of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers. She has completed internships at Lockheed Martin and Bank of America. Participating in a dual enrollment program at Edgewater Hight School and Valencia College, Avery completed 24 hours of coursework towards an associate degree and was named to the Valencia President’s Honor list. She moved nine times prior to high school graduation and persevered to become a straight A student. Avery plans to eventually earn an advanced degree in Astrobiology and join the aerospace industry.

To cope with the loss of a close family member, she began writing poetry to deal with her grief, and it gave her a new perspective on her own ambitions. Now at UCF, she will major in Biology, thus taking the next step toward her achieving her goal of attending veterinary school.

For years after, citizenship issues delayed her post-secondary education. These were finally overcome, and she pursued a degree at Advent University, where she now works. Exposed to the work of clinical staff, Chantal now aspires to become a nurse and midwife.

She watched her mother work tirelessly to provide opportunities for her and give her the opportunity to achieve her academic and career goals, which inspired her to aim high. Daniella plans to work as a pediatric nurse after receiving a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Central Florida. Ultimately, she would like to return to school, earn a master’s degree in nursing and serve as a nurse practitioner or nurse anesthetist, focusing on pediatrics.

Diego recently completed an internship at KPMG – one of the “Big 4” accounting firms – which is a testament to his commitment to this career path.

Karol went on to earn her associate degree during the 2020 pandemic and is now pursuing her bachelor’s degree at Seminole State College.

Arriving in the United States from her native Cuba unable to speak English, Lorena persevered through several menial jobs in manufacturing, hospitality, and food service, using her co-workers to practice the language, eventually becoming proficient. She eventually applied for and was accepted into the Seneff Honors College at Valencia College, which broadens the horizons of students by offering an enhanced curriculum and opportunities to explore numerous career and public service paths. Lorena’s immediate goal is to move on to the University of Central Florida and pursue a bachelor’s degree in computer science.

Luis Perdomo Hernandez is in his fourth year at the University of Central Florida. He graduated from high school Summa Cum Laude and is trilingual. He received a bronze and silver medal in the National French Contest and is also fluent in Spanish. Luis’ goal is to earn bachelor’s and master’s degrees in chemical engineering and then work in the pharmaceutical industry. He says he wants to honor his community and Hispanic heritage as a scientist to provide innovations that can facilitate a better standard of living for Americans and the generations to come.

Lyan and her family were displaced from her native Puerto Rico by Hurricane Maria in 2017. She was forced to leave her friends and schoolmates behind and start a new life in Oviedo, Florida. Lyan’s family has struggled financially since their arrival in Florida, which has led to frequent moves and constant economic challenges. However, Lyan has thrived academically, and will begin her college career at Seminole State College, where she will study kinesiology. It will be a first step toward achieving her goal of becoming a physical therapist.

Laura’s family was politically persecuted in her native Venezuela and came to the U.S. almost three years ago. During the pandemic Maria Laura volunteered with her school’s Hispanic Latino Student Union working with the school’s Exceptional Student Education (ESE) children and volunteers. During the early days of the pandemic, Rodolfo constructed 1,500 face shields using a 3D printer when PPE was non-existent. He delivered these to hospitals, nursing homes, police departments, and grocery stores. Rodolfo also organized a video game tournament at his school to raise money for a nonprofit that provides video games to the less fortunate. After graduation, Rodolfo plans to work for a major aerospace company like Boeing, Lockheed Martin, or SpaceX.

Sofia moved from to the United States from the Dominican Republic to attend Rollins College during the Covid pandemic, when only 200 students were on campus. Three years later she is a resident advisor and holds two other jobs on campus, including student psychology researcher. Motivated to study psychology by the stigma associated with mental health issues in her home country, Sofia’s goal is to earn a PhD in psychology, become a practicing psychologist, and work to change the perception of mental health illness in the Latino community.

Already having visited over a dozen countries, Sonia hopes to work abroad following her graduation from UCF in Spring 2024.

Poco después de su octavo cumpleaños, a Aref le diagnosticaron un sarcoma de Ewing en fase cuatro y acabó venciendo al cáncer tres veces. Su experiencia le llevó a ser voluntario en el Campamento Fiesta, que atiende a niños que luchan contra enfermedades terminales. Durante su último año de instituto, la pandemia afectó al negocio de su familia, así que empezó a trabajar a tiempo completo para ahorrar dinero y así poder ir a la universidad, todo esto mientras terminaba el instituto. Haber vivido en un hogar de acogida, en centros de convivencia y haber sido separado de sus seis hermanos a una edad temprana le enseñó a Félix a superar cualquier reto que se le presentara. Tras su graduación, Félix espera trabajar en una empresa de ingeniería biomédica o en una nueva empresa de biotecnología. Su objetivo a largo plazo es crear una empresa que cree prótesis para pacientes de bajos ingresos con acceso limitado a la tecnología médica avanzada.

En la actualidad, Gabriela participa activamente en organizaciones estudiantiles, trabaja a tiempo completo y disfruta practicando el mandarín. Su objetivo es llegar a ser directora general de un gran complejo turístico.

Como becaria aeroespacial del National Community College de la NASA, Grace ya tiene un gran comienzo en el campo profesional que ha elegido. Además, está tramitando su licencia de piloto privado. Y fue uno de los dos únicos estudiantes que recibieron el premio Priscilla Parker, basado en el talento.

Julie, es superviviente del cáncer y ha tenido que someterse a quimioterapia durante los años de instituto, por lo que está decidida a utilizar esta experiencia como fuente de inspiración mientras sigue su carrera de medicina. Karol, llegó a Estados Unidos procedente de Honduras con poco más de veinte años, no hablaba inglés y, por tanto, tenía pocas oportunidades de empleo. Finalmente encontró trabajo como empleada del hogar y empezó a aprender inglés aprendiendo las palabras de cada artículo de su contenedor de limpieza. También encontró un mentor en una organización benéfica local para mujeres que reorientó su carrera académica. Karol llegó a obtener su título de secundaria durante la pandemia de 2020 y ahora está cursando su licenciatura en el Seminole State College.

Después de perder un ojo a causa del cáncer a la edad de 2 años, Liam se enfrentó a luchas muy tempranas para adaptarse a su discapacidad. Siendo un músico talentoso, aprendió a afrontar directamente los retos que le planteaba su vista. Liam estaba decidido a formar parte de la banda de música de su instituto y se las ingenió para marchar con normalidad, incluso alineándose con sombras en el suelo para mantener el paso. Este proceso le convenció de que la «discapacidad» no significa «incapacidad» y le liberó para perseguir cualquier cosa que hiciera avanzar su crecimiento personal. Tras completar su formación, Liam seguirá una carrera como terapeuta licenciado, ayudando a otros a superar retos como los que él ha vivido en primera persona.

Al llegar a los Estados Unidos desde su Cuba natal y sin saber hablar inglés, Lorena se vio en la necesidad de trabajar en varios empleos de baja categoría en el sector manufacturero, la hostelería y el servicio de comidas. En cada empleo practicaba el idioma con sus compañeros de trabajo, hasta que consiguió dominarlo. Finalmente, solicitó y fue aceptada en el Seneff Honors College de Valencia College, un centro que amplía los horizontes de los estudiantes ofreciéndoles un plan de estudios mejorado y oportunidades para explorar numerosas trayectorias profesionales y de servicio público. El objetivo inmediato de Lorena es ir a la University of Central Florida y obtener una licenciatura en informática.

Estudiante universitaria de primera generación, planea trasladarse a la UCF, para obtener una licenciatura e ir a la escuela de odontología para convertirse en dentista especializada en cirugía maxilofacial. Durante la pandemia, María Laura se ofreció como voluntaria en la Unión de Estudiantes Hispanos Latinos de su escuela, trabajando con los niños y voluntarios de Educación para Estudiantes Excepcionales (ESE) de la escuela. A María le gusta pintar y dibujar en su tiempo libre.

Mientras crecía en Ecuador, Ornella fue testigo de los problemas de salud de su familia y de la incapacidad de la comunidad médica para resolverlos. Durante los primeros días de la pandemia, Rodolfo construyó 1.500 protectores faciales utilizando una impresora 3D cuando no existían los EPI. Los repartió en hospitales, residencias de ancianos, departamentos de policía y tiendas de comestibles. Rodolfo también organizó un torneo de videojuegos en su escuela para recaudar fondos para una organización sin fines de lucro que proporciona videojuegos a los menos afortunados. Tras su graduación, Rodolfo quiere trabajar en una gran empresa aeroespacial como Boeing, Lockheed Martin o SpaceX.

En su tercer año en la University of Central Floridal, Sebastián se vio obligado a dormir en su coche para poder asistir a las clases más exigentes del plan de estudios de ingeniería. Sin embargo, perseveró y mantuvo un alto promedio de calificaciones mientras trabajaba en varios empleos en el campus para cubrir sus gastos. En 2023, Sebastián terminará su carrera y aspira a dedicarse a problemas de impacto ambiental como la mejora de la sostenibilidad, la reducción de las emisiones de combustibles fósiles y el avance en la adopción de fuentes de energía alternativas.

Stephanie es especial en la promoción de este año por el hecho de que tanto ella como uno de sus hijos asistirán a la universidad en el mismo año académico. Encargarse de tres hijos, trabajar a tiempo completo y completar una carrera ha sido ciertamente un reto, pero Stephanie ha logrado obtener su título intermedio en Valencia College y ahora está trabajando para completar su licenciatura, también en Valencia College. Ella desea trabajar en el área de recursos humanos después de recibir su licenciatura.

El hecho de haber nacido con fibrosis quística (FQ) en Honduras significó que la familia de Stephanie -que ya había perdido una hija a causa de la FQ- disponía de un acceso limitado a los recursos sanitarios avanzados que se necesitaban para luchar contra esta compleja enfermedad. Pero su familia luchó, y ella logró sobrevivir para distinguirse académicamente, formando parte de la Rollins College President’s List por cuatro semestres consecutivos. Todo este éxito lo ha logrado mientras sigue tratando su fibrosis quística con un régimen diario de terapia y medicación. Después de su graduación, a finales de 2023, Stephanie utilizará su título en una actividad que repercuta en la vida de los demás, sirviendo al mismo tiempo de modelo para las jóvenes que se plantean una carrera en el ámbito de la ciencia, la tecnología, la ingeniería y las matemáticas (STEM).

Su compromiso con la lucha contra el cáncer de mama es prioritario, en honor a su madre. Cuando no está estudiando, Alejandra trabaja a tiempo parcial y ha sido voluntaria en una clínica de fisioterapia y en Orlando Health. Se está especializando en Justicia Criminal y planea asistir a la escuela de posgrado de asistentes médicos o trabajar para el FBI.

Alondra está muy comprometida con la solidaridad. Ha realizado chequeos gratuitos de la presión arterial para las personas sin hogar, ha servido como traductora para Shepherd’s Hope y ha trabajado como asistente médica para una organización sin fines de lucro que ayuda a las personas sin seguro médico. Alondra resultó seleccionada para participar en un programa de aprendizaje STEM y es muy activa en las organizaciones del campus. Poco después de su octavo cumpleaños, a Aref le diagnosticaron un sarcoma de Ewing en fase cuatro y acabó venciendo al cáncer tres veces. Su experiencia le llevó a ser voluntario en el Campamento Fiesta, que atiende a niños que luchan contra enfermedades terminales. Durante su último año de instituto, la pandemia afectó al negocio de su familia, así que empezó a trabajar a tiempo completo para ahorrar dinero y así poder ir a la universidad, todo esto mientras terminaba el instituto. En la actualidad, Aref sigue trabajando a tiempo parcial mientras compagina los estudios, las actividades extraescolares y el voluntariado.

Ahora está centrada en cumplir la promesa hecha a su difunto padre de utilizar sus experiencias vitales y su voz para animar a los demás.

Daniel tiene un profundo deseo de ayudar a los demás. Al llegar a los Estados Unidos desde Colombia en 2018, justo antes de las elecciones de mitad de período, se inspiró para animar a otros jóvenes a votar, incluso cuando él no podía hacerlo. Organizó eventos de registro de votantes y un seminario web informativo para educar a la comunidad sobre el proceso político. Como estudiante universitario de primera generación, Daniel planea asistir a la escuela de medicina y convertirse en un médico de atención primaria que sirve a las comunidades rurales.

Amante del teatro musical desde el quinto grado, Dafne aspira a terminar su título de licenciatura y transferirse a una universidad de artes. Dafne, estudiante universitaria de primera generación, nació y se crió en México, donde vivió hasta que se trasladó a Estados Unidos para participar en un programa de intercambio de estudiantes. Posteriormente se trasladó con su familia a Orlando. Además de estudiar y trabajar a tiempo parcial, Dafne ha participado activamente en producciones de coro, jazz y teatro musical.

Daniel has a profound drive to help others. Upon arriving in the U.S. from Colombia in 2018 just before the midterm elections, he was inspired to encourage fellow young people to vote even when he could not. He hosted voter registration events and an informative webinar to educate the community on the political process. As a first-generation college student, Daniel plans to attend medical school and become a primary care physician serving rural communities.

Jessica, que es la primera generación de estudiantes universitarios, trabaja en una agencia de State Farm, a la vez que se ocupa de sus estudios. Tras su graduación, tiene un plan de acción de cinco años para abrir su propia agencia.

Tras su graduación, planea entrar en un programa de doctorado en la Universidad de Stanford y desarrollar dispositivos médicos y técnicas de administración de fármacos para personas con diabetes.

Como bailarina de toda la vida, Kitana es la directora artística de la compañía de danza Knights and Damsels. Cuando el evento de 2020 se canceló debido a la pandemia, Kitana encontró formas creativas de motivar a sus compañeros de baile a través del Zoom. Como estudiante universitaria de primera generación, fue aceptada en el programa de investigación de verano de Carnegie Mellon University’s para estudiar cómo los algoritmos informáticos pueden ayudar a resolver los misterios del cerebro. Recientemente, completó otro programa de verano en el MIT para investigar la neurociencia cognitiva. Laila es presidenta y vicepresidenta de dos clubes en el campus y disfruta dando clases particulares a otros estudiantes matriculados en programas STEM.

Estudió arquitectura en su país y, desde que se mudó a Orlando, ha trabajado a tiempo completo en el negocio de la restauración para mantener a su familia. Leopoldo está entusiasmado con la idea de trabajar en el sector de los videojuegos cuando se gradúe. Es una estudiante de primera generación y sus intereses profesionales se centran en la automatización informática. Le gustaría contribuir al avance y la predicción de enfermedades perjudiciales para los seres humanos utilizando la inteligencia artificial y la informática. Tras su graduación, Mariana planea asistir a la facultad de medicina y ofrecer una atención sanitaria accesible como médico geriátrico.

Originaria de Texas, Mariana compite en el equipo de atletismo de la UCF. Tras la devastación del huracán María en Puerto Rico, las clases universitarias de Rocío se pospusieron durante varios meses. Decidió trasladarse sola a Orlando para retomar sus estudios en la UCF. Tres veces becada, planea asistir a la escuela de medicina, obtener un doctorado y convertirse en una oncóloga pediátrica quirúrgica. Un logro que enorgullece a Rocío es haber sido aceptada en el Programa de Investigación de Verano del Instituto Cardiovascular de Stanford.
Rodolfo Rodríguez

Durante los primeros días de la pandemia, Rodolfo construyó 1.500 protectores faciales utilizando una impresora 3D cuando no existían los EPI. Los repartió en hospitales, residencias de ancianos, departamentos de policía y tiendas de comestibles. Rodolfo también organizó un torneo de videojuegos en su escuela para recaudar fondos para una organización sin fines de lucro que proporciona videojuegos a los menos afortunados. Tras su graduación, Rodolfo quiere trabajar en una gran empresa aeroespacial como Boeing, Lockheed Martin o SpaceX.
Ronald Gonzalez

Estudiante de primera generación, Ronald sueña con crear la siguiente generación de robots. En el futuro, planea hacer un máster en Mecatrónica o en Ingeniería Mecánica. Ronald espera trabajar algún día para una empresa como Tesla en su misión de luchar contra el cambio climático. Aparte de los estudios, es cuatro veces campeón de la Spartan Race Trifecta. A través de su organización sin fines de lucro, Books for You, Ronald recogió y distribuyó más de 9.000 libros a cientos de personas.
Ruth Beatriz Morales

Ruth cita a su madre como su mayor inspiración y ve la educación superior como una forma de ayudar a su familia. Después de la graduación, Ruth planea trabajar para ayudar a las personas que no pueden defenderse por sí mismas. Además de obtener excelentes calificaciones, se ha ofrecido como voluntaria en los Boy Scouts y en Unidos Por Ecuador de Florida Central, trabajando en campañas de recolección de alimentos y de juguetes para las fiestas. En su tiempo libre, a Ruth le gusta hacer ejercicio, hacer manualidades y estar en la naturaleza.
Sylvia Ng

Criada por una madre de Costa Rica y un padre de Hong Kong, Sylvia empezó a jugar al fútbol a los 4 años. Una de sus oportunidades de voluntariado más significativas ha sido con una organización que ayuda a niños con discapacidades mentales y físicas a jugar al fútbol. Fue durante esta experiencia que se hizo una amiga para toda la vida que le enseñó lecciones de vida muy valiosas en el poco tiempo que estuvieron juntas. Sylvia tiene previsto cursar estudios de posgrado y de doctorado, y algún día trabajar para el FBI.
Tanya Bahena

A los 16 años, Tanya dejó México para trasladarse a Estados Unidos con su madre y sus hermanas. El proceso de inmigración de su familia duró casi 12 años y la ha inspirado a ayudar a otros inmigrantes. Una vez transferida a la UCF desde el Valencia College, Tanya fundó el Centro de Justicia para Inmigrantes, que pone en contacto a los estudiantes con organizaciones dedicadas a ayudar a los inmigrantes subrepresentados, como los solicitantes de asilo, los refugiados, las víctimas de la violencia doméstica y otros delitos. Su sueño es asistir a la escuela de derecho y convertirse en una abogada de inmigración.
Vimalys Rivera

Como voluntaria de Grace Medical Home, Vimalys ha acogido a los pacientes, les ha hecho preguntas sobre el COVID-19 y los ha examinado para comprobar su temperatura. Ver el alivio que expresan los pacientes cuando pueden comunicarse libremente con ella en su español nativo ha inspirado a Vimalys a seguir una carrera en la atención sanitaria. Después de graduarse, planea asistir a la escuela de medicina y convertirse en doctora.
